FAQ

  • Does it work?

Yes, but it’s best to start early in the season for optimal results

  • Do you service organic farms?

We do have substitutions that are fully approved for organic production and regularly provide our clients with any required reporting. Otherwise, timing and methods are exactly the same as non-organic farms

  • When in the season should we begin?

Generally March is a good time to start. When average low temperatures are above freezing, fly populations will grow

  • Is it safe for our employees and workers?

Yes, all materials are approved for use in mushroom houses for the use of mushroom flies. MYCOguard is licensed to apply treatments and protect themselves, the farm, and farm employees.

  • Are treatments safe for the mushrooms?

Yes, all our materials have passed crop toxicity tests conducted on mushrooms. The first treatments do not leave any residues on mushrooms since it is applied prior to casing.

  • If we hire you do we have to change our growing practices?

It’s very unlikely that our program will interfere with your crop management.

  • Are there any casing treatments we would have to add?

No— no changes are necessary if our recommended program is followed.

  • Do you service private residences?

Not at this time. However, if MYCOguard is able to service your nearby farms, that should make a difference in the number of flies you see in and around your home.

  • Do you offer consulting services?

Yes! Founder and President Eric Toedter is available to consult on pest management, airflow, peat alternatives, and more. If the trip is outside of PA, we require a minimum of two days onsite. Please contact us for details.

  • Where can I find more information on phorid flies?

We have worked closely with AMI over the last decade to share the most up to date information on phorid flies online and in the PA Integrated Pest Management Handbook. This page is a good place to start: https://www.americanmushroom.org/consumers/phorid-fly/
